Only dinosaurs invest in fossil fuels!

Saturday was a little chilly for standing around in the town centre for 3 hours, but, as part of the Global Divestment Mobilisation, we’d arranged to gather signatures for our petition calling on South Yorkshire Pension Authority to divest from fossil fuel companies. So several of us turned up to do just that, setting up our stall outside the Moor Market in Sheffield (including, of course our two dinosaurs, immediately identified by Green Party candidate Natalie Bennett as a Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus)!

We soon warmed up, helped by the important task of creating an impressive range of smaller dinosaurs out of modelling balloons.  We gave these away to any passing children who looked interested, and at the same time engaged in lively conversation with a wide range of adult shoppers, raising the issue of climate change and debating many issues ranging from does it exist to is it inevitable and therefore unstoppable.

Of course, we believe it is not inevitable as did the majority of the people we spoke to.  Support for our petition to the SYPA, asking them to remove their investments from fossil fuels and to reinvest it in local jobs and the renewable energy sector was strong and we collected many signatures on the day.

Next week – Clock Corner in Doncaster @ 10.30am on Saturday 13th May!  Hope to see you there.
