Protect local democracy – sign this petition
The government has proposed changes to the way local authorities in England and Wales invest their members’ pension funds. Under the plans, central government would have the power to veto investment decisions made by democratically elected local authorities. This is an attack on local democracy.
In recent years, councils across the UK have adopted fair trade principles or excluded fossil fuel, tobacco and arms companies from their investment portfolios in response to local concerns. Many councils have passed motions stating they will not procure services from companies that aid and abet Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territory, or from construction companies that blacklist trade union members.
